DC (STEP DC) Conference Brings Churches, Faith-Based Ministries, and Community Leaders Together to Elevate Neighborhoods in Deanwood, Ward 7, Washington, DC

One of the unique aspects of going to church in the DC area, is that the Christian world here is a small one. Contrary to what one might think about the area, it’s not unusual to find oneself worshiping next to someone from across the aisle politically.

Months of planning and organizing go into this ministry, and we are the ones who always come out so blessed.

Christ the Redeemer’s recent invite and connect event included a rock, paper, scissors battle and ugly sweater contest.

This year, All Saints' Church had its fourth annual Living Nativity and community food drive.

In December, Christ Church Vienna in Vienna, VA, offered Christmas services in Spanish. The response has been heartening, with new families attending after learning about the services through outreach to local elementary schools' social workers.

Throughout Advent, Truro Anglican Church in Fairfax, VA collected several truckloads of food and personal care items to deliver to local charities.

Bishop Chris participated in celebrating St. Nicholas during his visit to Incarnation Anglican in Arlington, VA.

On the evening of Saturday, Dec. 9, Christ the Savior Anglican, Glen Burnie, MD, extended the spirit of Christmas to the recovery community in the Arbutus, MD area through a heartwarming Christmas Dinner Outreach.

Does God answer prayer? Yes!! Yes!! We have seen God answer the prayers of the DOMA family at Christ the Redeemer in Dillsburg, PA.

On Saturday, October 7, Shepherd’s Heart Anglican Church participated in the Bikes, Bands, and Barbecue Bash event hosted by Church of the Apostles in Fairfax, VA. In addition to receiving donated bikes to repair, but neighbors popped by with bikes for repairs and tune-ups.

'The New Testament assumes that people outside of Christ and apart from God are lost and need a Savior. Jesus told vivid stories in Luke 15 about a coin, a sheep, and two sons. All were lost and all were sought. In those stories, to be lost is more about “awayness” than “badness.” The coin was away from the purse, the sheep from the sheepfold, and the sons from the father’s house.

This year, Church of the Epiphany in Chantilly VA tried something new. They held a pet blessing in recognition of St. Francis’ day in early October. But instead of holding it at church and expecting people to come to them, they set up in the front yard of the house of an adventurous Epiphany family and got to bless pets and meet neighbors as people took their animals out for their morning walks.  

You are likely familiar with Archbishop William Temple’s famous words, “The Church is the only institution that exists primarily for the benefit of those who are not its members.” We plastered that quote on our church website in Philadelphia. It inspires, it calls, and it convicts us to chew on what it means – practically. Honestly, 17 years later I wonder if we ever really plumbed the depths of that powerful assertion. It still feels far more aspirational than anything we ever realized.

This has been the heart and vision of our church, Christ Church Vienna, as we have taken prayerful, consistent and intentional steps toward knowing and inviting our Spanish-speaking neighbors here in Vienna into our lives and into the life of our church.  Ultimately our prayer is that Jesus would take the different groups that exist in our community that are all too easily divided, isolated and unknown one to another, and reconcile us to himself to create something new as we are all welcomed into one extended family, with Christ as our head.

We wish we could communicate the joy in our classes as we teach, learn, laugh, and enjoy community.  Our students come from the Middle East, Asia, South America, and Central America with the majority being Spanish speakers from Bolivia and Guatemala.

On a fall afternoon I remember chatting with a senior student who was interested in hearing more about my ministry. As I spoke with him, I began to illustrate a vision for college ministry through the local church, which I explained as “building a bridge”.
