Church Planting in the Diocese

Church Planting is central to the mission strategy of the Diocese of the Mid-Atlantic. Since its founding as a geographic diocese in the Anglican Church in North America, the diocese has consistently committed itself to planting a network of Anglican churches throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

Currently, our diocese is made up of 48 worshiping communities: 36 are self-sustaining congregations, 5 are mission churches, 2 are mission fellowships, and 7 are church plants in various stages of formation. They are located in Virginia, Maryland, Washington DC, Delaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. (See map.)

We hope to become a church planting network in which all of our churches are consistently working together to start new church plants. In its constitution and canons, the diocese provided for the formation of a permanent church planting leadership team, named the Great Commission Committee (GCC). This group is composed of veteran church planters and Laypersons with experience leading and serving church planting at diocesan and denominational levels. The GCC is led by the Rev. Tuck Bartholomew, the Canon for Church Planting.
