A Logo Story: Anglican Church of the Valley

The cross and typestyle for the logo of Anglican Church of the Valley were created for us about 2009 by an artist member of the church. It combines two Anglican graphic elements.  The compass rose is overlaid on a Celtic knot cross to emphasize Anglican tradition.  Our church was new then, and we wanted to emphasize that we were one of the more traditional Anglican branches of the Communion.

The compass rose includes the central Cross of St. George to emphasize the origins of the denomination and the words "The Truth shall make you free" (John 8:32) in Greek. It includes the compass arrows that symbolize the worldwide growth of the Communion.  The compass rose is laid over a traditional Celtic knot cross. This logo has been used by the church ever since.

Doug Cochran is a lay leader at the Anglican Church of the Valley in Staunton, VA.
